Default Need your advice...

Emery is almost 3 (on 12/1) and she is in a preschool class with kids that are all about 3.5-4. The teacher asked our sitter if we read to Emery when she was home because she won't sit and listen to stories.

I was very offended because we read to her all the time. IN fact the day before we had read 6 different Christmas books! However, it is usually before bedtime or a nap and she is usually sitting on our lap or laying down with us. I asked Emery why she didn't sit for the teach and she said because she wanted to play... I'm not sure what to do or if this behavior is really abnormal for her age. The teacher said this is something she will need to be able to do in Kindergarten. Ummm she will not start Kindergarten until 2012!

So my questions is do you think this is something I should be concerned about?

I'm so sorry that teacher is making you worry about this. I really wouldn't be concerned about Emery not sitting. I bet the teacher just forgot how much younger Emery is than the other kids.

I think asking for an almost 3 year old to sit still for that long it a bit much. You might want to remind her that Emery is younger than the other kids. I read stories to my kids all the time, but Noah would play, wander around for the longest time. They are 3 1/2 and sit quietly now for a story.

My Wyatt is 4 and loves to be read to but is also very active so if he makes it all the way through a book without taking off somewhere to play and leaving me hanging it is a miracle. I am sure you have nothing to worry about.

I agree. All kids are different, and expecting her to sit for circle time at 3 for more than a few minutes at a time is pretty unrealistic. I suggest contacting the teacher directly to discuss it, and reminding her how much younger she is and that reading is a quiet time activity in your family.

Maybe you can start reading to her during the day here and there to make her accustomed to it.
