Talking Santa- how much do they know?

The discussion on the School Age board has me wondering what the rest of you all are doing with your lil ones when it comes to Santa.

I have been on the fence about the whole Santa thing. I feel bad for lying to her and also wondering how to explain certain things...but Dh seems so excited about having Kendall believing in Santa, so we discussed it and have agreed to just go with it.

Last year, we didn't talk about him too much, but we did tell her the art desk was from Santa, but I don't think she paid much attention.

We asked her this year if she knows who Santa is and she quickly said "Santa will come to our house and bring presents!" Then we went to ToysRus to get ideas and came home & wrote everything down. I told her we will make a list for Santa, but that he won't be able to bring everything on the list. She asked of course asked why! I told her Santa will just bring a few things, and the rest we can use to give ideas to her grandparents, aunts, uncles, and such for gift ideas. Oh, and cookies...we have to make cookies for Santa, lol!

I have a strict "no lying" policy when it comes to my kids, but for this I make an exception because I feel that the magic of the whole thing is an important, fun, exciting, and magical part of childhood. I believed for a long time after I knew in my head it wasn't real, but because I just loved the magic of it. I think it inspires creativity and sparks imagination.

The only thing I have wondered about is that when the kids figure out about Santa, I don't want them thinking that God is a made up "character", too. We aren't overly religious, but I still don't want that being confused. I figure though that we'll deal with that when the time comes.

The kids have so much fun believing, and I think that so much of the fun of childhood has been sucked right out-- I refuse to take something else away. JMO Good luck!

I love this time of the year! I love to see their little faces. This will be the 2nd year that we will ride in the firetrucks for the parade next saturday. The girls were disappointed since the parade leads to the municpal building where santa gets off the truck and lights the tree. The girls were bummed that we cldnt stay to watch and went back to the firehouse. I was surprised when they rather do that again this yr.

How fun Diane!

We used to take a train ride where the train would go pick up Santa and bring him back. It was dark and we went thru an orchard and the girls always believed me when I said the oranges on the trees were ornaments growing on the trees.

I agree about Christmas magic and I'm a actually a little bit disappointed that it didn't take more to convince Leanna when I told her the truth!
