We got a letter from the Principal, not the teacher, yesterday recommending Kaitlyn gets Basic Skill Instruction(BSI) for reading. Its designed to serve small groups of students who have been identified as needing extra assistance. I contacted Kaitlyn's teacher from last year and shes quite surprised. We know Kaitlyn is shy, but the words she has been sent home with, she does well saying and spells them. With only 2 weeks back to school, I just cannot believe this is enough time to recognize Kaitlyn having a problem. I emailed the teacher and mentioned that we know Kaitlyn is shy, but if she feels she does see a problem, then we wont hesitate in putting her in.

I think you made the right choice. We had some issues with Braedon's teacher this year. She was labeling him (my words not hers) as having attention problems. When in reality it was more her style of teaching than anything , she's not very clear on things and he's SOOOOO SHY he will not ask for help.

I had to email her about 3 or 4 times with complaints about how she graded things , such as she marked papers wrong for reversing a 13 to a 31 on a math problem the 2nd week of school and that is totally age appropriate when adding numbers. After she got about my 4th email and I told her I was going to request a meeting with the principal amazingly he started doing *so much better* and has all A's now.

Thanks! She did respond back and wants me to call her. :\ She was on break, but by the time I read it, it was too late. If I cannot contact her during lunch, we will speak on Tuesday...then again, back to school night is Thursday and always can talk to her then.

To be devils advocate, if she is shy the small group work might be good for her even if she doesn't need the enrichment. If that makes sense. As long as they aren't holding her back, I think working on the class work in a smaller more specific setting is only a good thing.

Definitely talk with her though and see why they feel she needs the help and if it is something that she can move in and out of.

We are in week 3 or 4 here and they have already begun to identify the kids that need enrichment whether academically, socially or whatever.

Schools are mandated now to identify any child that might need extra supports and sometimes they pick up kids that don't need the help, but it is better than them missing kids that truly do need it I think.

In our school they do a Response to Intervention system and they set up goals and ways to meet those goals for the kids. It isn't like a special ed program or anything but it gives kids services and supports they need without having to go through too much paperwork, etc...

Good luck at the parents meeting. Hopefully they are just making sure that she is working up to her potential and able to learn as much as she can this year!

I talked w/ the teacher...apparently her teacher from last year recorded that she read a non fiction level C text w/ 98% accurancy with limited comprehension(3/7-low). She tried a fiction level C text w/ her and after the 2nd page she made 8 errors and she stopped. Eight errors is considered frustration level. She went back to non fiction level B text, where she scored 95% and excellent comprehension(6/7). The teachers are asked to submit a list of all students reading at a level A or B for the BSI. She suggested its better to put her in and see how it goes than to try to get her in later if she needs it. Students can easily be dismissed if they are not in need of the services. So thats it in a nutshell. Sounds like its better just to put her in now.
