  • This is Lucas' newest phrase. He wants to help with everything and sometimes it's hard to figure out how to break tasks down to where he can participate.

He helps me feed our fish each morning. I scoop the food with the teaspoon and then he holds onto my hand to help me sprinkle it into the tank. We also have a tiny aquatic frog and snail that live in the fish tank so he gets to drop in the little food pellets for the frog and the algae wafer for the snail. He helps DH feed the dog each evening by scooping the food and then pouring it in the dog dish.

He likes to help cook so we let him stir the food while we hold onto the saucepan or skillet handle and then hold over his hand that is holding the spoon or spatula.

Sometimes if DH is giving me a back massage he likes to get in there and help massage too which I think is really sweet.

Anyone else got a little helper on your hands and other suggestions of ways that he can participate or tasks he could do that I may not have thought of? I want to definitely encourage the his desire to be helpful.

  • He could help toss the laundry into the machine, water plants, sweep the kitchen floor with a broom, wash the front of the dishwasher (this is a favorite of my kids). He could help with putting away his own clothes (socks, pants), towels, washcloths, and dish towels. If your house has more than one bathroom, he could help refill the toilet paper rolls. Once it warms up, he could help with pulling weeds (my kids love this, too) or collecting sticks/pine cones/stones.

How great that he wants to help out!!

  • Nate helps with the laundry (I hand him the clothes from the washer and he puts them in the dryer). He also likes to help dust, so I give him a swiffer cloth and he goes to work.

Today he helped me move the car. We had a guy come to the house to fix our garage door today. My truck was still in the garage and it needed to be moved forward a few feet. Nate wanted to help me, so I let him sit on my lap and hold on to the steering wheel while I moved the truck forward. Just call me Britney Spears.

  • I forgot about the laundry - he does help put the clothes in the washer and dryer, press the buttons (mine are up on the back of the washer so I have to lift him and he can't just fiddle with the buttons at will). He also helps to pour the soap and fabric softener into their dispensers.

At this stage I think the TP would all end up rolled off into the toilet or a heap on the floor.

He also helps DH a lot out in the garage/workshop and knows how to handle basic tools like hammers, screwdrivers and pliers and wrenches. DH also lets him help with less dangerous power tools like the battery operated drill gun and the air compressor.

  • we do the same here. Eli LOVES the vacuum and swiffers. We have a small vacuum that he uses extremely well. He loves the dishwasher, cooking with mommy, helping with outside things with dH, he can clean up poop (this is awesome he uses a shovel and a bucket), He helps with laundry as well.
