Brent had to write an essay this week. It was assigned on Monday and due today. His English teacher had them write a paper writing in 1st person as a raindrop. Again WTH is up with that? It only had to be 5 paragraphs and her version of paragraph is that it has to be more than three sentences. I think he did a pretty good job on it. It was a class assignment as well as homework but he is in GT on Tuesdays so he only got to work on it Monday, monday night and then last night. He also had to turn in a 1st and 2nd draft with mark ups and an illustration of evaporation, condensation and percipitation.

Those type of things just kill my kids. Milo already has obvious issues (due to his Asperger's) just knowing what he himself is feeling but then to figure out what a raindrop might feel or do would literally push him over the edge. LOL!

My two get weird assignments like that in their gifted classes too. I appreciate having them think differently and outside the norm, but some of them are just bizarre and seem TOO out there.

The amount of extra homework gifted requires really is a lot some days. Add in some sports and it really is tough at such a young age. Ilijana is freaking out right now as her partner on the current gifted assignment is a girl who has divorced parents. She isn't home most weekends (as she's at her Dad's who's an ex-NFL player) and we can't get the girls together. She is so upset over it, but what can we do? Her parents don't really seem too interested in having them work on it, so I can't do any more than that.

Just so frustrating.

I bet Brent did a great job. Hopefully he can look back on it when he is all grown and in a successful career that he really delved in to the thoughts of a raindrop. LOL!

Sounds like a crazy prompt!

There is much discussion over these types of assignments in the education world.

I disagree with gifted = more work. I think it should equal more challenging work, as a replacement for whatever everyone else is doing, not as an addition to it.

Sounds like that assignment was an attempt to integrate science with writing.

Our GT program is a replacement for most of the regular work. There are some things they have to make up only because it's a building lesson and if they don't do the work then the next step in the process might not be understood. did that make sense? They only go to GT once a week but it's all day on Tuesdays so anything in normal classroom on those days they are exempt from doing.
