Default Extra Credit

Brent told me that he got extra credit points this past week. His teacher asked them to write about something important that had happened in the news in the past few weeks. When Steve Jobs passed away we watched a special on him that night and I was telling Brent how important he had been to the computer industry. So he wrote about his death. He said a ton of kids had no idea what to write about and kept asking the teacher for hints. Sad really that kids are so wrapped up in video games, sports and activities that they don't know ANYTHING that is going on the world in the past few weeks.

I agree Susan. That is really great what you did to teach the kids about such a great man.

I LOVE the news and politics and have to sometimes make sure the kids don't watch TOO much as I know first hand that a little information goes a long way with kids.

That being said, you are so right. People raise their kids in bubbles anymore, and often the parents aren't any more informed. I know we all lead busy lives, and maybe don't always have time to sit and read a paper or watch a news program, but with the internet you can catch up on news in a few minutes.

WTG Brent!!

Glad he got the idea! That's awesome! I agree that it's sad that the kids have no clue what is going on in the worldl, and sadly with all the "stuff" we have to do and fear of people getting upset, current events get covered less and less.

(If Josh had that assignment, I think he would write about the "bad man" who is trying to hurt teachers, firefighters, and police officers, and how we are going to go vote to get the bad man's law overturned, lol I think he would also probably ask his teacher the same thing he asked me-- "Mommy, if he is so bad, why don't the police just go, arrest him, and throw him in jail?")

Jeanne too funny! Braedon probably would have written or talked about something to do with an earthquake or other natural disaster. He is fasinated with them.

I'm one of those raising kids in a bubble . Mostly because I don't know how to talk about stuff without scaring my kids. Rachel is ok, but Leanna is a worrier. She'll make herself physically ill thinking about something like a bad storm or possible earthquake. She has gotten better but sometimes it takes a lot of discussion about whatever the scary topic is.
