Default Neighborhood Kids (Part 2)

It's Saturday again and I knew that it would only be a matter of time before we heard a knocking at our door. The first one showed up around 10:00. She's 8 years old and we went to her house and met her mom and grandmother during the week. Shortly after that, the 4-year old from a different family shows up BY HERSELF!!!! I asked her if she walked to our house by herself and she said "yeah, my mom said it was OK because I told her I was going to Nate's house." They live down the block, and around the corner from us. About a half hour later her 6-year old brother shows up BY HIMSELF.

The 8-year old had to leave at noon. So as she was leaving, the 4-year old said that her mom said they didn't have to be home until 5:30. WHAT?!?!?!?!? You send your two young kids out and tell them not to be home until dinner?????? Now I know you can't always believe what a 4-year old says, so I'm not going to judge her mom, but if it's true - YIKES!!!!!

Nate and I have plans today, so I'm sending the 2 kids home at 1:00.

Maybe I'm just paranoid because Nate is our one and only, but I just can't see how someone can let their 4 and 6-year old just wander the neighborhood. Even if they do say where they are going - who's to say they made it there safe? I know things used to be that way back when I was a kid, but unfortunately life is very different now.

I could not handle that either. I would have to say something for sure, no matter how uncomfortable. Did she expect you to feed her kids lunch too?

I don't even let Ryan go outside to play alone except in the fenced in backyard and I text the next door neighbor (who is a good friend) to ask if her son wants to come out and play, never send him over to find out himself or invite himself in to play.
