Why the heck do schools give out candy as rewards? This drives me insane!

My dd just got braces a month ago and on the very first day of school her teacher gave her a lollipop. What kind of reward is that for a child who can not eat it? I hate that they give them candy at all, but I can understand at parties etc. Food should neverbe given as a reward for academics. That is just plain ignorance in my opinion.

Anyone else take issue with this stuff, or am I just an old fuddy duddy?

it bothers me too the other day my DD said the teacher gave them gum for something, what happened to no gum in school? I only let her have gum as a reward for taking meds and that is so she can get the nasty taste out of her mouth and since she is hardly ever sick she dosn't get it very often.
Now her teacher also give books as rewards, so far she has had 3 small homework papers and she has got some sort of book for turning it in this I like but the candy drives me nuts.

I don't have a problem with candy as a reward as long as it is not all the time.

Ashlee has brought home candy almost daily still. So I called the school today and spoke to the principal. She already knows my stance on this and agrees with me. She said she will get the word out again to try to keep it to a minimum.
