Default Help - my daughter's friend said something that worries me -

Calandra has a "bestest" friend Anna, and Anna's mom and I get along quite well. We've been doing some carpooling. Today, when we were just about at school, Anna said that one time a police officer came to her house and almost gave her babysitter a ticket. I asked if the babysitter had parked badly or something, and Anna said "no, she was yelling too loud at us." I asked her if this was her babysitter Mary, who I've met and seems quite nice. Mary has been their nanny for a few years I think. Anna then said "I think people who are English are nicer than people who are Spanish." (Mary is latin american.)

Yipes!

Anna is a chatterbox and she has a big sister who is extremely smart and verbal. So, I suspect that their mom has heard about this incident. I think their mom would be very embarrassed to know that Anna is talking about it, but I also would feel horrible if I know this and their mom doesn't! Any advice about how to broach the subject? I'm thinking a phone call tonight, but I also could email.

Jo

Putting myself in your friend's place, I think I would want a phone call. What if she doesn't know that a police officer had been at their house? It won't be an easy conversation, but I think you should call.

Quick update - I had lunch with the mom unexpectedly today since I had other business near her office. I told her about what her daughter said. She had not heard of it, but said perhaps Anna had mixed up another incident. Sometime over the past year, they had a police officer come over when a teenage babysitter's boyfriend took a car on a joyride. The babysitter's parents told the cops that the daughter was babysitting, but when the cops showed up they learned that the babysitter had lied to the parents! Or something like that.

Anyway, the mom was appropriately concerned and was going to investigate by asking the daughters about whether this happened. I also noted that Anna had made the comment about English/Spanish people, and of course this also concerned the mom.

(Now I'll be on an anti-bias crusade with that kid! Most of her preschool teachers speak Spanish, which is intentional since the preschool operates a summer Spanish camp and an afternoon Spanish enrichment program! And the teachers are all extremely nice and have excellent early-child-education degrees.)
