I'm moving to a new area and have enrolled my oldest child in Pre K in the public school (still not sure he's got a spot yet) and I need to figure out what to do for before / after care since I work from 7:30 AM till 4 PM each day and won't be there to pick him up till around 4:45.

They have a program run by the YMCA called Pryme Tyme that is held at the school but only have so many slots available and I'm not sure I'll be able to get him in.

How do any of you working mom's handle after school care for young kids? I have no family in the area and the only friends I have work also.

When I taught school they had the YMCA after school program, the kids loved it. I hope you can get him in a spot. Good luck, sorry I can't give you more advice.

  • I answered you on our playgroup thread, but here it is again.

Most of the kids needing care around me either go to the Y afterschool program or get on the bus to go to a nearby in home sitter.

I just found a church program that is literally a mile from my house on my way home that will pick him up every day on a van with 3 or 4 other kids and take him (2 miles) to the church for their afterschool program. I think this is probably better than the YMCA option for us but I'm still going to see what they say.

I also found a brand new daycare / learning center that opened in Jan that is about 2 miles from our house that is accepting kids for the fall. Very small scaled only 8 kids in the 2 year class and 6 in the 12 -24 month class but I'm hopeful it will be something I like. I'm so spoiled by the school my kids go to now and how much I love it.

  • Glad that everything has worked out so nicely for you and the kids. It can be so stressful to think about childcare.

I hope that your move goes smoothly and that they transition easily for you.
