Quick update - I talked with Annie last night and she seemed to appreciate the concern. DH talked with Calandra at bedtime and CJ said Annie is sometimes cranky with her. However, DH and I also recognize that Calandra can be AWFULLY whiny and controlling, and it makes us cranky! We laugh a little about Grandpa (FIL) saying Annie is harsh on CJ because he caves in to every little whine, which of course only reinforces the whining. He probably thinks we are too harsh too!

I think Annie's starting school will push this all one way or the other. One theory I have is that she is partying and having as much fun as she can, because she knows when she starts classes in a couple of weeks it's going to be a lot of work, early hours, and not much fun! When classes start I think it's likely that she'll buckle down and her mood will even out. However, we think it's also possible that she won't be able to hack a heavy class load and job, and she'll want to keep up the social life, so she'll flake out big time. Either way we should know in about six weeks whether things are going to work out!
