Explaining a Move to a Nursing Home to Kids

  • My Aunt Ruth (actually my Grandmother's first cousin) is 93ys old. About 6 months ago she moved to an assisted living facility. It was no big deal to the kids at all we still visited her just in a different place.

Now my Grandmother, who is her power of attorney, has made the decision that the move is permanent and that we should start cleaning out her house and "get anything we need/want".

We went up yesterday and took the two oldest kids. It was hard for me emotionally and we tried to explain what was going on to the kids but I don't think they really understand.

Anyone been through something like that and want to add any advice??

  • We explained this recently to our kids, as my husband's grandmother was moved to a nursing home. We told the kids that as people get older, they're not able to take care of themselves so they have to move into a place that has nurses to help care for them (Grandma is in a wheelchair now). They're 7 & 9 years old so they "understood" and we're praying for Grandma every day. They know that when you get old, you're likely to die of old age and so they're realizing that Grandma is old now (she just turned 89--DH's other grandparents are in their 90s but doing well and living at home still).

We've always taken a "be as honest as possible but give them only as much information as is age-appropriate.
