Default "fart"

Do you think "fart" is a bad word?

Ok, let me rephrase.... Do you think "fart" is a school appropriate word?

A kid wrote a poem with the word fart in it, and wanted to read it to the class. I told him it wasn't school appropriate (but I didn't make him change the poem or anything) to share with the class. I thought about it since then though and wondered if I'm being too harsh.

I refer to that as "cutting the cheese" in my classroom. However, I do tell my students to "stop fiddle-farting around"

I don't think you were being too harsh. What grade do you teach? You may have never gotten your class back into control after that one.

I teach 4th grade. It's hard though because of *where* I teach. I am inner-inner city and I have spent all year teaching the kids acceptable use of speech in certain social situations.
(i know this will be tmi but anyway)
The kids don't come to me knowing that you don't speak to me the same way you speak to your friends, or your parents, or your dog, or your principal, etc. I have to *teach* them that "if you speak in school like you're shouting to your friend in your back yard, people are going to think you think school is a joke." We talk a lot about how *I* do not speak to them in the same way that I speak to my own children, or to my husband, and the way I speak to them at times may not be acceptable at school. We talk about how if you want to be taken seriously as a learner you have to act and speak a certain way.
And, believe it or not, this year's kids are hanging on my every word and putting it into practice.

And the kid knew that farting was a silly non-school-appropriate word.

I would say that it can be used appropriately.
It certainly isn't a bad word... but it isn't appropriate talk for the majority of situations.

now, if the poem is about farts and is basically made as potty talk .. then no, not appropriate in school.
But if it fits the subject matter, then I'd let it slide.

At the school where I worked the Librarian read to the kids, "Walter the Farting Dog."

I agree with Karen. If it was a poem with potty talk, no thank you.
