Does she still need pap smears? She'd still have a cervix, right?

Only if they didn't take the cervix. If the hysterectomy is done vaginially the cervix would be gone, but if done abdominally they often leave it anymore.

I am getting a full hysterectomy next month and so far they are keeping my cervix and ovaries and telling me I'll still need paps and also to palpate to check for any ovarian masses.

I would think if the hyster was total and ALL girl parts were taken she would not need a pap smear any longer.

It's not me!

My MIL had a hysterectomy 50 yrs ago. I made an appt with a gyno for her & I was just wondering if they'd do a pelvic exam or not. I made the appt because since she's been off estrogen she's been complaining of various things that she thinks are from stopping the estrogen. (I expected the complaints - she is vain & afraid her hair will fall out & skin will go bad.) So I figured I'd let the gyno tell her an 81yr old does not need estrogen supplements.

Good luck Patience! I hope your recovery is easy.
