Susan, that is wonderful that they got an early diagnosis. That seems to be key in having better outcomes. The more intensive therapy he receives before age 6 the better off he'll be.

That is what still eats at me. I knew since age 2 for sure that Milo had Autism but nobody would do anything about it and kept telling me he was just "smart" and "difficult". Once we finally got the diagnosis, it was too late to get the best benefit from the many therapies like ABA, etc...

It isn't too late no matter WHEN a kid is diagnosed, but it is such a huge advantage to have early intervention services to help.

I'm sorry to hear of his diagnosis, but it sounds like he and his family have a lot of love and support to help them. That is invaluable!!

I saw the most improvement in Milo (until recently) from age 3-4. Once I knew what I likely was dealing with I just kept reading and reading and working with him and he really responded. Their little brains are so bendable and changeable at those young ages. He will make great strides I'm sure of it!

I agree with Nicole that early intervention will give your nephew the best possible outcome. Our ped recommended evaluation for autism when Lukas was 2-1/2, so we were able to get him early intervention therapies until his third birthday, then a smooth transition to the special ed preschool in our school district. In just the last six months, we've seen a huge difference in his receptive and expressive language. I have high hopes!
