Default Tv programs and kids ages

Brent loves scary movies and things that are based on mystery. He also loves contests and he's watched a bit of Survivor off and on through the years but it was so little that he never really sat and watched a whole program so I didn't worry much about content.

FF to now he sees all the Survivor commercials on and wants to watch it. It's not rated badly but I feel weird letting him watch it alone. I don't want to watch it for the 1st time with him either because I might need to censor it and he will be ticked.

But I also don't want to watch it again with him!

Do any of your kids watch Survivor? do you worry over it?

Now the other part. He is starting to notice the programs like NCIS, Criminal Minds etc. He wants to know what they are really about, can he watch them etc. He's not the type of kid to get scared at all he just loves stuff like that (gets it from me).

What age is appropriate for them to start watching main stream programs like that?

Brent will be 10 in March.

What specifically about Survivor are you afraid you would need to censor? I'm sure he's probably heard swear words by now, and the really bad ones get bleeped out. He knows not to use them. I think he's old enough-- but I would want to have a talk with him about the fact that it's not "real." Yeah, it's real people but they have writers and editors and it's not really ok to backstab people/lie/etc, but this is a game and people going into this game know they are going to be lied to. Real adults don't really act like that -- with the crying and the shouting etc. It's just like a regular tv show, really, for entertainment only.
The Censor Queen approves Survivor.

In fact, I just let Josh watch a little of The Amazing Race this weekend. He wasn't all that into it, so he's not ready yet.

Oh, and I hate crime shows so I can't comment on the rest. DH makes me sit through CSI and I wouldn't let my 10 year old watch that just because of the abuse, reinactments, sex stuff, exposure to hookers, gangs, etc which for your kid he's probably a little young still.

I agree but I do like NCIS. Its not as intense and all the investigations have something to do with the military.

I've never watched Survivor so I can't comment on that.

Well Survivor is not really bad. I guess I think of things like they are in their underware , sleeping together and acting all lovey and he's noticing a lot of that now. He will be 10 soon so it's normal but this show is NOT normal.

I'm not overly protective but at the same time want to make sure I'm not making a huge mistake because I have my head in the sand about what other parents think is OK.

I agree NCIS I think is probably the most appropriate. I might let him watch that one with me soon. We DVR it so I can FF if need be.
