Default babysitter

DD is sick again and my sitter says it's b/c she puts EVERYTHING into her mouth and that she should stop doing that. SHe is almost 15m and she has always had an oral fixation with toys, books etc. I think that it's perfectly normal for toddlers to still put stuff in their mouth (i remember posting a question about this a while back too ) I just don' t think it's something I should fight with DD about...it would be a full time job to get her to keep things out of her mouth and most of all....I don't want her to stop if it's not hurting her. What are your thoughts on this?

It's TOTALLY normal & expected for a 15mo old to put stuff in their mouths!! When I have kids in the oral stage I try to throw any "mouthed" toys in the sink to be washed later... and the toys (especially the ones that seem "tasty" to them) get cleaned more than usual!! In the winter, I also "mist" the whole toy room with Lysol nearly every night.

Some kids are more oral than others... and some do it longer than others.

However.... (when you have the energy

) when you see her with something in her mouth you can "pretend" she's showing it to you... "Oh LOOK, you found the caterpillar book!! Let's READ it!" and gently bring it down from her mouth, open the book & read...
Same thing with toys... "You found the toy that rattles... let's shake shake shake it!!" and gently bring it down from her mouth & help her shake it.

Toddlers learn everything through their senses and mouthing toys is very normal. Try to stop that would create an unpleasant power struggle, and that always has ripple effects. Not worth it! Your sitter should expect this kind of behavior. If DD is getting sick from putting things in her mouth, maybe your sitter isn't properly sanitizing her toys.

My kids put everything in their mouths and they didn't get sick any more than normal.

I agree with the others about sanitizing the toys. When I worked at Day care center we sanitized different toys everyday, but all of the toys got sanitized once a week, plus during cold and flu season we lysoled all the tables, chairs ect twice a day!
