The recipe that I use comes from my grandmother. It has molasses, brown sugar and a couple other ingredients. They're sweet- but ohhhh so yummy!

That sounds more like BBQ or baked beans. It sounds good though!

This is what I do:
Soak dried beans overnight. Rinse and put in crockpot with 1 can of tomatoes, 1 chopped onion, a hambone & chopped ham, and Lawry's Seasoning salt. Fill with water to about 2 inches above beans. Cook 10 + hours on high.

I don't know what the true "Southern" way to cook beans is...I just tried that & liked it.
