Default Beans & Ham without the Ham?

Any of you make/like Beans & Ham? I do, but I rarely make ham so I don't have the hambone to cook it with and the ham steaks they sell aren't the same thing.

What can I use instead of a ham bone? Bacon is icky in the crockpot.

I use all sorts of substitutes. Bacon, chopped lunch meat usually.

Some supermarkets sell hambones by themselves.

I also buy han by the slice and save the little ring of hambone that is in it and save them in a little baggie in the freezer to use in beans later.

I don't put ham in my beans. I usually cook it on the side and have scalloped potatoes too.

What do you flavor the beans with?

I don't know the way its supposed to be made, but I made up my own recipe. I use the hambone, a bunch of Lawry's Seasoned Salt, a can of stewed tomatoes, and a chopped onion. I think it would be bland without the hambone.

The recipe that I use comes from my grandmother. It has molasses, brown sugar and a couple other ingredients. They're sweet- but ohhhh so yummy!
