How long has California been fighting wildfire? Doesn't it seem like years? Why is California always burning?

my best guess is the drought they have had for the past few years,so the vegetation gets all dried out and all it takes is a small spark to start things up..it also seems alot of the houses have alot of brush around them which makes the houses easy targets...on the same thought you would think after a few years of fires there would be very little vegetation to burn

Some of the reasons above, but we also have a lot of homes that are in moutainous/hilly areas that make it difficult to fight the fires. We also have a lot lightening storms that catch the brush and forests on fire. Down south in the L.A. area they have these winds called Santa Ana Winds that are very strong, well arsonists love to start fires during the Santa Ana's because it spreads the fires fast.

Yup, we've been burning ever since I can remember. I remember a fire that burned from the valley I lived in all the way to the beach. The canyon I lived in 18 yrs ago just burned up last month. I will not live in a canyon anymore. I didn't mind until I had kids and now I'm ultra paranoid.

Alot is started by lightning but like Valleygirl said we get high winds and low humidity at this time of the year and firebugs can't resist.

yeah - lightening, and the santa anna winds are a big. the arsonists are stupid as well as a bunch of people who do stupid stuff like throw cigarette butts out their windows
