Four-year-olds are generally developmentally ready to begin learning the sounds that letters make, "read" their favorite books from memory, and can sight read many familiar words. The best thing to do to encourage reading is to read with him, let him see you reading, and give him many opportunites to see the written word used in meaningful ways - making shopping lists, writing his name and other words important to him, like Mommy, Daddy, truck, etc., making signs to label his block towers or other creations, taking dictation on his drawings on what they are about, pointing out signs that have the letters of his name and making a game of finding them, talking about print in the general world, etc. Children also have to be quite fluent in speaking and listening to become competent readers, so lots of meaningful conversation is important.
The key to learning to read and LOVE reading is making words and reading fun and meaningful in the context of HIS world. And, he has time; the average age for learning to read is @ 6.Here are some links: To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 15 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.
