Oh yes! The larger Joann's should offer a very beginning class. Call them up and tell them you've never sewn before, but want to learn and they'll sign you up for the right one. Our Joann offers beginning classes for adults and teens. You could call a local quilting shop if you want to learn to quilt (I think quilting is easier then garment construction as you just sew straight lines) or fabric stores if you want to learn home dec and clothing construction.

Once you know how to operate a machine and have a few basic skills under you you'll be set! You can teach yourself after that or ask and someone can try to walk you through it! The most important skill I think to learn after learning to sew straight is how to iron properly. Its different then ironing clothing and a well ironed piece of clothing as you are sewing will make or break the finished project!

I'm with Q, I'd love to learn to sew! My mom used to make our Easter dresses and even a few outfits and I would love to do that for my daugther. I only know how to repair a seam that has torn on clothes or a pillow. I took HomeEc in 7th grade, but we only did stuff like sew on buttons and make small Christmas ornaments and stuff. I want to learn how to use a sewing machine! Does JoAnn really offer classes on that? I wouldn't know where else to look...
The JoAnn's near me does. They have all kinds of classes but I haven't taken any.

yeah -
Joanns does - and you can look up any of the fabric stores in your location and ask them if they hold classes or know of a place that does.

Also, the city rec centers sometimes hold classes so you can check ou your city parks and rec catalogues.

Quilting is where I started (after home ec in school) and I learned quite a bit about my machine from that.
After that, it was simple stuff like cooking aprons. Then it was costumes and simple clothes (like elastic waist pants) and I gradually just got used to looking at patterns and instructions and realizing that THAT'S what they meant when they say X.
