Default tips on taking pics of kids

i was wondering if any of you with kids out there have any tips on taking photos of your kids and getting some WITH their eyes open?

as you can see in Lola's first pics, Michael constantly closes his eyes when he takes pictures. he says it is the flash, but even when i take pics without the flash on, he closes his eyes! it makes him look sleepy or goofy.

so, any tips out there or is this just to be expected of kids?

thanks so much!

We say it runs in the family because DH's father ALWAYS has his eyes closed in photos. Even in our wedding photos, his eyes are closed. Sarah does this a lot. Neither of our girls ever look directly at the camera. They always look off to the side or somewhere else.

you might try zooming in from a distance, so that the children don't know you're taking their picture. if i get too close, my kids want to see the display.

all I had to do was buy a camera (point-n-shoot) that didn't have a lag time between when I pressed the button and when the shutter actually clicked

You can try taking more candid shots and less posed ones. The candids of the kids holding hands or laying near eachother end up looking more sentimental than trying to pose them. GL!
