Default Birth control and Breastfeeding?

at my 6 week check, i wanted to ask my doctor about BC. i havent been on BCP in years and i really dont want to go back on them due to the headaches and rashes that i would get. before DH and i were ttc, we used condoms and we both really didnt like that.

is bf considered BC? if not, what type do you use when you nurse exclusively?

my husband and i use condoms. my doctor won't prescribe BCP because here they're a bit higher in hormone concentration. i don't think breastfeeding is a complete guarantee, especially after a baby starts solids (and so, drinks less milk). i don't want anything other than the BCP, so we will 'suffer' with condoms until tommy weans. i wish i had some suggestions for you, i am just replying with what i'm doing at the moment. good luck in finding BC you like!

I have gotten pg 3 times while breastfeeding, don't use it as bc unless you want to get pregnant.

Birth control pills will not be a good mix with breastfeeding. The hormones in them can mess with your supply. And nursing can work but not necessarily, exactly as Kristin said above. Basically, your options are those that don't include hormones, so barrier methods like diaphragms, condoms, or the IUD that doesn't incorporate any hormones.

I believe there are a couple of bcp's considered "mini pills" that only have one of the common hormones bcp's usually have and are considered ok to use while bf'ing. I personally didn't want to even try that because I was still concerned about it affecting my supply.

I got my cycle back at only 3 months with both kids even though I was nursing exclusively on demand around the clock! Definitely don't rely soley on bf'ing as birth control.

Don't rely on timing your cycles and just avoiding or using a barrier method around ovulation time either unless you're sure you'll never, say...have a few too many drinks and miscalculate where you are in your cycle...
That's how I'm ending up with twins!

I'd gone for a consultation and was planning to get the IUD the month I found out I was pregnant with the twins.
