Unhappy On the edge...

I'm on the edge of switching to formula. As if her delivery wasn't traumatic enough, now it seems that Charlotte can't nurse. I've always been a firm believer (remember that I bf'd Sarah for 13 months) in the idea that all babies can nurse...until now. She has had trouble since the beginning and now that my nipples are cracked, blistery, & bleeding, I went to the LC at the hospital. She said that Charolotte has a "tongue issue" and that she doesn't reach it out far enough to create a sufficient latch in order to get any milk out.

All of this has resulted in a 16 ounce weight loss for her and an all but non-existent milk supply. I am at my wit's end. I just want her to be able to nurse and grow. As I type this, I sit sobbing, wishing for an answer. I truly don't want to switch to formula. The idea of not nursing her is tearing my heart out of my chest. But I don't know what else to do!! The docs are riding me because she's losing so much weight but my heart can't stand the thought of formula feeding her.

I'm trying to nurse her with EBM supplementation but I get less than an ounce every time I pump. My supply should not be like this ONE WEEK after delivery!!! There is nothing more frustrating than trying to feed your baby with nothing there--and watching her weight continue to decrease.

I've never felt so helpless. I'm waiting for another LC to call me back about ways to help increase my supply--maybe she'll have ideas?? Oh, goodness...I hope so.

How can it be so easy to nurse one child and then realize that it's nearly impossible with another child? That doesn't seem fair! I know I'm whining now...I'll stop. I just so desperately don't want to switch. Oh, I really don't want to.

Oh Deanna the turmoil you must be going through!! I have my heart set on breastfeeding this baby-my last- for as long as possible but I keep thinking "what if, for some reason, I can't". I feel your pain, honestly I do. I wish there was something I could do or say to help...

I am so sorry, i know how you feel. I so wanted to breast feed Kylie, I tried and tried, but she just did not get it. My nipples were crakced and bleeding, it hurt so bad when she would nurse. She also lost lots of weight, I had no milk supply, EBM was maybe one ounce out of each breast, and that was after 1 hour of pumping. I eventualy had to giver her formula. When it came down to it, I had to do what was best for her. She is now a happy healthy 11 month old. I now how hard it is though, keep trying.

Deanna, I'm so sorry you and Charlotte are having such a hard time with this.

Do you think it would help if you tried one of those supplementation systems where there is a tube that comes down to your nipple with a bag of formula and/or EBM up on your shoulder so thw baby nurses at your breast but also gets the supplemental nutrition? That might help still stimulate your supply while also getting some food into Charlotte. I don't really know anything specific about those systems, but I've heard of them and seen a couple pictures.

Good luck!! I so hope you can figure out something.
