help with some issues?

  • two separate issues....

First of all, I'm finding that once I latch Matthew on, which he does nearly perfect at, he adjusts himself, and then swallows a LOT of air. He's gassy anyway, and this is making it even worse. I take him off and start again but he just readjusts again...
second of all, what does it mean when they pull back on your nipple? He backs his head away WITH me still attached to him! Not only does it hurt like nobody's business, then his latch gets messed up. I know I'm full, and I can hear him swallowing milk before he does it.

He also plays around with it when he's nursing-- and comes unlatched a lot. I'm extra paranoid because the ped made the comment about his small chin and asked if he was having trouble sucking.

    Any thoughts?

  • Marek has always pulled away like that. I think it may change the flow of the milk so he likes it better. I'm not positive, but he still does it now. When he was a tiny newborn and less coordinated with his hands, he'd often pull back so hard the nipple came out of his mouth, then cry about it. It was mighty annoying. Now I'm just used to it, and it doesn't hurt as much as it used to. These little people have their eating preferences, and there's not much we can do about it.
