  • Name: Tracey and Kara

    How long: About 6 months.

What was the problem: (1) 75% tongue-tie (not treated until Kara was 10 days old). (2) Being put on antibiotics for womb lining infection that made my milk taste bitter, which Kara HATED. (3) Kara having hip dysplasia and having to wear a Pavlik harness that meant we had to learn to breastfeed all over again. (4) Forceful let-down which caused Kara to go on several nursing strikes. (5) The arrival of teeth at 5.5 months and biting injuries, and (6) Blocked ducts.

What we did: Just persevered through each and every one of them. We did consult LC's to help in the early days with regard to the tongue-tie, but the rest Kara and I just muddled through together, with the help of a little advice from a few trusted websites.

Why: Because Kara's wanted to do it (with a little help from the Midwife!). I had no desire to breastfeed, I wanted to exclusively express, but after the emergency c-section (after a 42 hour labour Kara was found to be breech!), Kara was plonked on my chest, and she rooted and wriggled herself into position and started nursing, so I said "Oh, ok! We're doing this are we?".

Outcome: Still nursing, and have no desires to stop, until Kara's done with me! I love it so much - Gotta love those endorphins!!

  • Wow, Tracey- that is very impressive. I thought I had been through alot as I am exclusively expressing since Hope refused to b/f since being in the NICU. I have had lots of engorgement issues, mastitis, and plugged ducts as well- not fun...and yet..I am still pumping! You go girl! You should be very proud of overcoming all of those obstacles and still nursing!

  • And you too!! Expressing is a lot of hard work, so for you to keep going through your problems must mean you're as stubborn and determined as I am LOL!
