Question how helpful are your doctors?

I was just curious to see how helpful your ped. are with your little one's allergies? Have they told/instructed you on what to do in case of a reaction? Do you feel like they are knowledgable about allergies? Or do you go to an allergist for all of your allergy concerns?

I'm just wondering because Cora's ped. isn't helpful at all about her allergies. I guess I've never asked what I need to do in case of an allergic reaction, but looking back on it I would think it would be something her ped. would have told us once we got the allergy testing results. I guess I just don't feel like her ped. is very knowledgeable about allergies. It bothers me that he has never told me about preparing foods, the importance of products that have things like "manufactured in the same factory as products containing milk" on their labels, and what I need to do in case of a reaction. Cora's eaten a piece of cheese and a doritto since we found out she was allergic to cheese and I didn't give her anything. She didn't have any hives or seem upset. The only difference is she woke up constantly during the night crying. I bet her poor tummy was hurting. Hmm I guess this is a vent filled question post.

I'm very displeased with Elijah's allergy specialist... I would love to change doctors but he's the only one here!

A few months ago Elijah was having mystery allergic reactions that would cause his eyes to swell and water and his cheek to turn bright red... we went through a basic skin test, didn't get any answer, and our dr. basically said it could be one of a million things and to just give him benadryl when it happens. It was happening EVERY day though, and the poor kid couldn't be doped up on Benadryl all the time (he's in school). We finally took him to the afterhours clinic for a second opinion, got a prescription for allergy eyedrops, and haven't had a problem since.

Jen - I really think that Cora's allergy is mild and since she has never had a severe skin reaction or breathing problem (not that I am discounting her tummy troubles from the milk at all) then her ped may just take a bit more relaxed approach to it all. It is really up to you how you want to handle things. If it really bothers you, I would for sure talk to the ped about your concerns. Since Ryan's reactions are all skin related and not breathing, we are not diligent about labels that say "processed in a plant with his other allergens". The FDA got more strict with the guidelines about reporting possible cross contaminations because there are people out there that just breathe or touch something and get a very bad reaction but thankfully that is not us. I just do my best and for sure do not give him anything that KNOWINGLY has his specific allergens and we have been fine but it is your call. I do call his allergist's office if I have a question and his nurse is super nice and helpful but I also ask his ped questions too and she is helpful as well or tells me to speak to his allergist if she is not sure herself.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE my own allergist. They do not see kids until they're 3 though. I hope he takes our insurance so Denton can go to him when he's 3!! My ped is fairly helpful but not for any real specific advice as far as what to feed him and what bath products to use and stuff like that.

I think your right Michelle - Cora's allergy is mild and not really life threatening (thank goodness!). I think it just bothers me that I feel unprepared and seems like the allergist and ped. haven't done anything to help educate me in any way. I actually don't care very much for Cora's ped. to begin with, but our options of doctors are very limited so we've just stuck with him for the time being. I think I'll try the allergist's nurse first with a few questions. I know when we took Cora around 10 months to her ped. I overheard the nurse (it's a small practice, so just one nurse and one doctor) ask the doctor what happens if Cora can't tolerate milk or soy milk. Things like that just make me feel like they just don't deal with food allergies at that particular office. So if I called them I don't know what kind of an answer I'll get.

I've been doing foods "processed in a plant with milk" type of stuff. She seems fine and we haven't had any problems, so I just avoid stuff that has dairy.

When I told her ped. that I was bummed they didn't do the allergy testing for egg he basically said, well it doesn't matter because she shouldn't have egg until she's two. At first I took that to mean that they recommend that all kids wait until 2, but after researching I guess for kids with other allergies, they suggest waiting until they are 2.
