Thanks for asking this question! We are considering the very same thing. We paid for private school this year but for what we are paying in gas and tuition we could easily rent in a better district for the same price.

Just so hard to decide when it involves money, kids and the only home they've known.

Great advice and things to think about.

We are in (sort of) the same boat. I've been wanting to move to a better area with better schools since I was pregnant, but the feelings have tripled now that dd is almost 2. We have gone back & forth on options and they all stink. And we are not debt free! We've had a real estate friend look into the comps & we owe much more than what we could get in this neighborhod now. I refuse to pay rent again, but we also don't want the hassle of being landlords. We looked over the rent-to-own thing as a way to get out of the house, but we are still scared about that. Then we thought if we could refi & get some cash to fix stuff around the house that needs to be done then that way when the market does turn around we'll be ready to sell...but if we owe more than the value then there is no equity to get extra cash from! The whole situation stinks! We are not doing poorly enough to qualify for any sort of assistance and we always pay our mortgage on time, so any modification would be out of the question. I am really praying & hoping by the time dd has to go to school that things will be different.
