Allowance questions again

  • I know we've discussed this before, but I have some allowance questions....

    1) What's the going rate for a 5 year old's allowance?

    2) I also have a 3 year old, who isn't "ready" to totally understand the concept of an allowance. How do I justify it when the 5 year old has to use his allowance to buy something that I'm just going to "give" to the 3 year old?

  • Braedon gets $5 for the week if he does his chores and I don't have a lot of back talking or not minding from him.

I don't know what to tell you on the purchases because we've always included Brooke and Braedon even when they were really young. They might not have fully understood but we let them have their wallet and helped them pay for stuff (using their money) and it helped them understand the process plus it showed Brent that they were using their money just like he was.

  • What kind of stuff do they have to use their money to buy?

  • Well I have little savers so they rarely want to use their money for anything. If it's junk I don't want to buy and really don't think they need or should have I'll say " well if you want it then we'll get your money and come back and get it" , normally this totally ends the discussion.

They all chose to buy hermit crabs on vacation. Brooke bought a pair of mermaid earrings and braclet, Brent bought a surfer braclet and Braedon bought a snake carved from wood.

Brent wants a DS game his friend has and I refuse to buy it. If he wants it that bad he will use his money (he has over $400 other than savings).

Brooke used some money to buy a Pony DS game recently and Braedon was dying for the Star Wars game so he bought that. I didn't really *approve* but then again it's their money and they do use the DS so I let them buy it. They know I have Veto power any day of the week.

  • See, my grandma gave me an allowance growing up and I tended to hoard it too. I had a jar which ended up being 2-3 jars that were full of money (bills and ones). I know Josh will spend it all at first, but he's smart enough also to learn from his mistakes.
