Question Do you budget?

So, to start out, let's talk about budgeting.

Do you budget?

If you do, how do you determine your budget?

Do you work with DH/SO on the budget? Do you always agree?

What's the best/worst thing about living on a budget, or NOT living on a budget?

Let's get this board rolling, girl!

None of the above.

I NEED one/want one, but never know where to start, what works, etc.

We spend a LOT of money on stupid stuff, but when we are suddenly broke, we don't remember any of it!

SIGH!

HELP!

Do you budget? Yes, we recently started Dave Ramsey's Total Money Makeover in December and live on a tight budget in order to get out of debt and start to build long-term wealth.

If you do, how do you determine your budget? Every two weeks, we pay the bills and then, using Quicken to keep track of any debits or deposits, write out what we'll need to purchase in the two week period before DH gets paid again. Then we write a big check for the total of our anticipated expenses and cash it from our checkings. We divide that money up into specified envelopes so we shop with CASH only.

Do you work with DH/SO on the budget? Do you always agree? We have our "Budget Meeting" every two weeks and we do it together. We have a "Pork Barrel" list on the fridge for listing things that come to mind that will need to go into the next budget. Then we sit down together one night and figure it out. It takes about an hour (it used to take much longer) and then we're done. It feels better when it's done. We dont' always agree

What's the best/worst thing about living on a budget, or NOT living on a budget? The best thing is that it feels good to be paying $1200/month toward our debt and seeing a light at the end of the tunnel. It's also really great to not feel bad about spending money on something--because the money is set aside for that purpose, I feel okay about spending it on that. The worst thing about living on a budget is that BUDGETS SUCK! But budgets are what will make us wealthy later so we won't have to worry so much about budgeting!!

Right now I kind of have a budget. I have recently paid off 3 credit cards (only one left!) but for the moment my extra money is going towards our upcoming WDW vacation. That will be paid for before we go in early October, so I'll start a serious campaign after we get home to start paying off the last credit card. I'm hoping to have it paid off within the next year so I can be debt free.
