When I had dd and ds I was billed directly for anesthesia. My insurance sent the money to me to forward to them. It is how it is done at my hospital-hopefully yours too!

DH told me not to panic. On the bottom of the stub it stated "Hospital Billed" or something to that effect. Not to do anything if/when we get another bill. Seems like they bill the patient and the insurance and if BOTH pays, they made out.

When I have a question like that, I contact my insurance company and ask if they were billed for it. If they don't show a claim, contact the hospital and make sure they submit it. That's happened to us a few times and if you're not watching closely, they'll stick it to you.

I don't know if they think anybody will actually pay before insurance adjustments, the statements are probably generated and mailed automatically.

I get Dr bills and if it doesn't say its been adj for insur I wait to pay until I get a statement with the insur adj on it. The Dr's offices know it takes a while, so if that bill isn't paid asap I'm sure its no big deal.

Dopey - Blue Cross has (or used to at least) something in their contracts that say the Dr's have to submit within a certain time period and if they don't, the patient isn't supposed to be liable for it. I had a lab company try to bill me 2 yrs later but it got thrown out because they never submitted it to insur. I would have paid my share, but I never even got a bill until I started getting letters from a collection agency!

In our hospitals the anesthesia is billed on its own and is paid aside from the actual surgery.

You got lots of good information.

I just got a "bill" in the mail for $8K of labwork. I freaked out. Turns out it will/is all covered but that is just the way the medical facility sends out statements until they get word from insurance.

Gotta love the stress of medical bills right when you are dealing with a medical issue? Usually if you or a spouse are sick and aren't able to work as much and then you get hit with monstrous bills. Does wonders for a persons health. LOL!

I wish there was a better way/system.
