I recently picked up a couple of gift cards for some friends as Christmas gifts. I didn't have to step foot in a retail store. All I had to do was get them from my local grocery store. I know Safeway has over 250 gift cards to choose from. Do you get gift cards from grocery stores or do you prefer to get them from the retail store directly?

I just found out that our local grocery store has that option too.

I was wondering if there was a surcharge for picking up gift cards at a grocery store like that when it wasn't the store you were buying a giftcard for. If that was the case, no way would I buy the gift card with the surcharge.
I like my money too much to just give it away like that for convenience.

No, there is no surcharge for purchasing a gift card from a grocery store. Getting one from your grocery store is like getting a gift card from the retail store directly. I just recently got my friend a Starbucks gift card and had to pay no additional fees. Retail gift cards generally don't have a surcharge fee. However, the Visa and American Express gift cards sometimes have additional fees. Just read the back of the card to make sure.

There are a bunch of "gift card malls" in the grocery stores around here. There are no extra fees for them either. DH and I will be going on Sunday to go "gift card shopping" for my brother, his siblings, my parents and his parents. And we only have to go to one place.
