Lightbulb Book Review: Room by Emma Donoghue

Just finished this book, and it was a page-turner. This was one of the first books I can remember wanted to read the ending to make sure everything came out ok. Check it out!

Amazon Best of the Month, September 2010: In many ways, Jack is a typical 5-year-old. He likes to read books, watch TV, and play games with his Ma. But Jack is different in a big way--he has lived his entire life in a single room, sharing the tiny space with only his mother and an unnerving nighttime visitor known as Old Nick. For Jack, Room is the only world he knows, but for Ma, it is a prison in which she has tried to craft a normal life for her son. When their insular world suddenly expands beyond the confines of their four walls, the consequences are piercing and extraordinary. Despite its profoundly disturbing premise, Emma Donoghue's Room is rife with moments of hope and beauty, and the dogged determination to live, even in the most desolate circumstances. A stunning and original novel of survival in captivity, readers who enter Room will leave staggered, as though, like Jack, they are seeing the world for the very first time. --Lynette Mong

Sounds good but intense!

Do you use one of those online sites to help pick books? My library is not good for browsing but I can request books

I read a review of this on Amazon and thought it looked good. Didn't Jen read this recently too? I will definitely have to check it out!

Sharyn, I have a couple of good sources for reading ideas.

- Recommendations from friends like you all
- Book review articles in the Chicago Tribune and periodicals
- Recommendations on Amazon (I look up a book I like and see at the bottom what other books people who enjoyed this book have also ordered)
- The best way - browsing in a book store. I'm such a slug. I go into the bookstore for an hour and write down titles or photograph the covers, then go to the library web site and put them on my list. I honestly feel you can kind of judge a book by its cover. Room was one I found by this method.

This book was not as intense as you might think, given the subject matter, because the narrator is such a little kid. Even though what has gone on is horrifying, because it's filtered through Jack's eyes, it's softened, if that makes sense. And it has a happy ending!
