I'll nominate When I Was Joe by Keren David.

From Booklist
A British teen in a witness-protection program finds it difficult to keep his head down in this tense debut. Prime witness to a murder involving a major London crime family, no sooner does Ty give the police his statement than a petrol bomb goes off, and he and his unstable single mother are disguised and rushed off to a distant town. His new identity becomes compromised when “Joe” suddenly finds himself a chick magnet and an outstanding athlete in his new school, attracts a violent bully, and is drawn to mousy classmate Claire, who is nursing a very disturbing personal secret. As Ty reveals in well-spaced hints, he himself is concealing a few facts from the police about his involvement in the crime. A victim of both circumstances and of his own good but not always wise intentions, Ty makes an engaging protagonist who is caught up in a situation that slips further and further out of his control in ways that will keep readers on the edges of their seats. The author also folds in credible details about WPP strictures and procedures, and plans at least one sequel. Grades 6-9. --John Peters --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
