Nonfiction. In the 1960s, as white male fighter pilots were being tested to be astronauts, a small group of women pilots was also put through the same tests. Thirteen women passed the tests, and although they fought for the right to be astronauts, this dream was denied them. This 130-page book tells the gripping stories of the individual women, as well as the story of their collective effort to break the gender barrier in space travel. Highly recommended.(Candlewick Press)
She wants to be an astronaut so I think she may like this book!

Thanks everybody!

I suggested the astronaut book and she didn't even want to look it up. We went to the library and she found some books about forensic investigation (she loves NCIS) so she will do her book report on one of those. I also found a book about ppl working to save an almost-extinct parrot that only lives on 2 New Zealand islands so if the crime scene books aren't good she has a backup.

I was surprised she couldn't do it on something like Marley & Me - it had to be more of an instructive book than a story even if the story is true. It was difficult to find a book that isn't written like an adult text book on a subject a 12yr old is interested in!
