I was going to ask about the triple screen also, but like she said it does have alot of false positives. But it help in the decision making process.

Between my age and the genetic disorder that we carry (dh and me) we were offered many amnios during my 10 term pregnancies. There IS a real risk and if I were you, I would pass. There's one question you might ask yourself --

If the baby does have DS, will you terminate? If so, then YES - do the amnio. If that wouldn't make any difference to you, then don't risk the baby with an amnio.

Good luck to you!

My doctor wanted me to have one due to age, but I told him that I wanted all the other test first and if they saw something then I would think about it. I was a high risk pregnancy to begin with so I didn't want to chance the risk.

I ended up having an amnio at 36weeks because I was having a lot of health issues and they wanted to see if her lungs were mature enough. It scared me so much, but it wasn't a horrible procedure. I'm glad I did the procedure because we found out her lungs weren't mature enough to be delivered so we waited another week and a half.

Good Luck with your decision.

I never did one. As said previously, doesn't make any difference in the outcome for me so why risk it? I'm 40 too. My Dr. never even suggested it. My girlfriend had one and had no trouble and said it was no biggy. She was 41 I think. I wouldn't do it. I've gone through enough, so have you!! L

I hope you can come to a decision you feel happy with.
I'm sure they would pick up any problems during your 20wk scan, which is really in depth and I remember the u/s tech who did mine telling me they would normally pick up any issues then anyway.
I can understand that you'd want to be prepared should there be any issues, I would too. I personally would wait until the 20wk scan, but that's me, I don't have the age issue to consider, and this is you and your baby. You've had enough stress to deal with already, you deserve to relax and enjoy your pg, so whichever course of action you feel would enable you to do that..
