Question so do you think that if I...

sew up the button hole in Sarah's new jeans, remove the button from the other side....

that I could then sucessfully crimp a snap on in it's place? (the appropriate halves on either side of the fly)

I'm starting to get desperate thinking about Sarah going to school in her new pants (size 7) that only come in the button pants and not snap pants and having accident after accident because she can't figure out the buttons yet..

I think you could... but I'm not the one to ask.

Do they have uniforms? If not, what about cotton elastic waisted pants?

I think you should "whip up"

some mock fly elastic waist jeans for her! No one would be the wiser!

What I would worry about is the huge hole that would be left in the fabric. A size 16 snap isn't probably going to cover it. You'd want a size 22-24 I think to cover the hole well and you'd have to order them online and buy a setter I assume (I'm not sure what equipment you have).

I use size 20 resin snaps on my girls jeans because that's what dies and parts I have. They are slightly smaller then a traditional jeans button, but they hold really well! I even put them on my jeans and they are great!

Mock fly would be the best bet though! You might be able to fray check the holes and put velcro and possibly a decorative button over the hole.

yeah - that's what I'm worried about - finding a snap big enough to cover it. And with that giant size, I would have to buy a new setter.
I just have the cheapo hand setter for 'generic' sizes.

hmm, maybe she wouldn't care if she left her button unbuttoned.

currently, she doesn't even unsnap her pants usually... she just slides them down because she's got the sides all elastic-ed up and so there's some give in the waist to allow for that.

sigh..
I'll keep thinking. I'm not really feeling like I have time to throw together some pants, but I might just have to....

The setters aren't that expensive! You'd need to get the standard setter and an adapter for the larger sizes. Their snaps are long prong and fabulous as well! This is the kind I use for metal snaps and they are great!

I think it would be very difficult to get the jeans button off though! They aren't meant to be removed. You might need a bolt clipper or something to cut them off!
