The school wanted to pay teachers to spend 1 hour after school 2 times a week to tutor kids. I decided to do it, mainly because I have some really nice kids with a lot of potential that I thought I could actually help in that time.

We are only allowed to make base rate, that is, the hourly rate for a brand new teacher.

After all was said and done (taxes) I made $14/hr. Well, I have to pay my sitter $5 extra an hour every time I do it. Sooooooo I'm making $9/hr with my Master's Degree. Pffft.

I'm not complaining--- since I didn't do it for the money in the first place, but I thought it was funny.

The best part, the absolute best part, is that DH could have made what I'm going to make throughout the whole program by working 1 1/2 Saturdays at his manufacturing job.

That is really harsh... insulting.... sorry....

My district would never, ever pay us for something like that, so I guess it's good you got paid at all.

It's getting ugly in NY....my district is now cutting 81 jobs (teacher and support, but no admin....)

Ouch! I recently stopped tutoring but I tutored just one student, once a week, at the library, for one hour (how many prepositional phrases can I use in one sentence?

) and was paid $40/hr cash.

Yes, when I tutored privately, I made $20/hr. That seems to be the going rate here. However, I really didn't enjoy it at all! It was almost painful- and totally not the fault of the kids, just not my cup o'tea. This is a small group which I got to choose, so I picked kids who I knew would 1)come, 2) work hard, and 3) perhaps get some value-added points by advancing into the next category and helping with AYP.
