I've gone out on the web to explore additional ideas for our 2010 reading challenge. Below is a list of options we might consider.
Which of the following ideas do you like best for our 2010 Reading Room challenge? Please give your first, second and third choices. First choices will get 3 points, second choices 2 points, third choices one point, and the choice with the most points wins.
1. An A-to-Z challenge (like we did in 2008). Read one book to cover each letter of the alphabet, based on the author's first or last name.
2. Personal reading goal. Pledge to read a certain number of books in 2010, and see
if you can hit your number.
3. Genre challenge. Read one book from each of a number of genres. We can change the genres this year - maybe include Self Help, Historical Fiction, Western, SciFi. This was a tough challenge, so I'm not expecting a lot of takers for this.
4. Shelf Discovery Challenge.
Shelf Discovery is a book of essays about classic Young Adult books that influenced the women of today (think Judy Blume, Paul Zindel, Lois Duncan, etc.). Choose one (or more) book each month from the list of books discussed in
Discovery Challenge (table of contents -

5. New author challenge. Read 15, 25 or 50 (you decide based on your reading time and speed) books by authors you've never read before.
6. Book award challenge. Read 12 books that have won a prize. Your list must include at least 6 different awards:
* Agatha Award
* Alex Award
* Anthony Award
* Arthur C. Clarke Award
* Booker Prize
* Bram Stoker Award
* Carnegie Medal
* Commonwealth Writers' Prize
* Costa/Whitbread
* Edgar Award
* Eisner Award
* Giller Prize
* Gold Dagger Award
* Governor General
* Hugo Award
* IMPAC Dublin Award
* Independent Foreign Fiction
* James Tait Black Memorial
* Kiriyama Prize
* Miles Franklin Award
* National Book Award
* NBCC Award
* Nebula Award
* Newbery Award
* Nobel Prize
* Orange Prize
* PEN/Faulkner
* PEN/Hemingway
* Printz Award
* Pulitzer Prize
* Royal Society Prize
* Spur Award
* World Fantasy Award
7. Global reading challenge. Read 12 books that are either set in or written by an author from 12 different countries other than the United States. You can expand the goal to 20 countries or more
if you want a real challenge.
8. Theme reading challenge. Read 12 books (or more
if you choose) that fall within a common theme. Themes can be geographic, genre, author, subject matter, or anything in between! Ideas: books about books, books set in the same geographic area, books with a color in the title, books about vampires, books with a common word in the title, Gothic classics, fairy tales retold for adults, high school classics, Asian culture, WWII, Canada, books in translation, and books by the same author.
If we do this, each participant will declare their theme at the beginning of the challenge and then list their books as they go along.
So let's hear your top 3, or
if you have an idea for something else we can do, post it below so I can add it to the list and give everyone a chance to consider it.
