definately most DEFINATELY a routine!!
If for no other reason than the kids really require one.
I get up and shower before
DH leaves for work so that the kids are never left 'unsupervised'. (one can argue whether or not
DH is actually supervising at all though

when the kids are really young and are doing 2 naps. I would stay home all morning to make sure that the naps were not uninterrupted. I had the morning home routine.
afternoon was always at home for lunch. Then the afternoon was home for afternoon naps.
If I went out for errands, I tried to do it inbetween naps so that they were never interrupted so they were short.
When the kids were a little older, then I made a routine of going out in the mornings to do something fun with the kids, and the home routine in the afternoon for afternoon naps.
Tuesdays, I took them to a roller skating class (yes, for toddlers and the parents could walk on the floor and you could bring strollers onto the floor too).
Wednesdays I would go to a playgroup. (at an indoor gym put on by the city's rec department). It was a minimal cost.
Fridays, we did story time at the library (for free)
I didn't always do rollerskating, and I didn't always do the playgroup. But it was often enough...
then I would throw in other special trips to go feed the ducks or take a hike at a local park when the weather was slightly better. (all in the morning in place of those morning naps)
if I needed to do errands, those were on the other 'nonscheduled days'.
Now that the kids are in school -- they are STILL doing quiet time in the afternoon on weekends or 1/2 days of school and they actually need that down time to themselves. My DS is upset when he doesn't get it and I take him on errands instead.

Definately routines are very important. For you and for the kids. You'll find you get a whole lot done
if you do it that way too.
