Default Question

Hi...I've been lurking for a little while and am coming out of hiding to ask you guys this ....
Does your toddler sit for storytime? I took my toddler out today to a Valentine's thing, we haven't been to this place in a while. I really want to get her interacting with munchkins her own age cause she's around older kids ALOT. She was running around and singing and dancing and playing easy enough. But when everything calmed down for storytime, she was still like the Energizer bunny!
She went up to the front and stood there for a minute and then decided the candy hiding on the table behind the lady reading was much more interesting. She just can't sit down and listen to a story...does this happen to you guys?
She sits at home when I'm reading, but she's always asking questions and pointing things out in books. I'm thinking maybe she's not a storytime child...I dunno???

Your child sounds pretty normal!

Any child uner the age of 3 really can't be expected to sit for more than a few minutes, especially in an exciting and unfamiliar place. Tods are motor-oriented, and gather and process information through physical engagement with their environments. Reading stories to tods in large groups really isn't developmentally appropriate; it's too abstract and difficult for them to attend to without moving, touching, talking, etc. All children are different and some may be able to sit longer than others, but expecting them to do it well is asking for frustration on everyone's part!

We stick to pretty short stories (my daughter is a little over 2), or if I'm reading a longer book to my older daughter, I don't think much of it if my little one gets up and wanders around.

my daughter was completely INcapable of sitting still for even 10 seconds (and that's no exaggeration) when she was little. (like from the time she could actually move until she was medicated at the age of 4.5 for severe ADHD).
Storytime was absolutely out of the question because #1, she couldn't stay put or even be in an appropriate area/zone, and #2, she's VERY loud

so it wasn't so much the movement, but the talking and the noise she made that made her presence at story time unacceptable. My DS isn't much better. he could sit still... *if* he was at all inclined to hear a story. But he'd rather be doing than listening. He too is a MAJOR talker and there isn't a chance that he would leave a story time without pissing off every other parent there.
So I basically never went after trying it here and there for a while.
I did see how the other "normal" children were. And,,... well... my kids aren't normal.

Ok....well we tried a gymnastics class yesterday and she did great! Followed directions and waited her turn (for the most part), so I think that might be a better way to go...at least for now.
Yeah - I'm thinking maybe she's just not a storytime kid, ya know?
I'l be allright with that. Esp. because most of the time she likes to look at books when I read them to her!
