  • Hello ladies.I have been wondering a lot lately about my menstrual cycle.I've always had irregular periods, but for some reason I got my period on January 10,2011.I've had it now for almost one week.Does this mean I'm starting to have a normal period? My husband and I are trying to concieve for our first baby, but its hard to predict ovulation because of my irregular periods. Will it be easier this time to concieve for a baby? Can I get pregnant the day after my period is done?

  • Hi!
How were your periods irregular? Were you skipping months? Or were they just a day or two long?

A week(7 days) is a tiny bit long for a normal period. On average they last between 3-5 days. I've always had about 6 day periods, so I'm a bit long too.

Normally you will ovulate 10-14 days after the FIRST day of you last period. Some women ovualte sooner some later. I would recommend getting a basel body temp thermometer and charting your periods for 4-6 months. There's a tool on this site for that under FERTILITY. You might consider getting an ovulation prediction kit once you have a handle on when, how long, etc your periods are.
    Good Luck!

  • Get a copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. Charting your basal body temperature, cervical fluid characteristics and cervical position will give you the information you need to figure out when you're ovulating.

Very few people will ovulate before day 9 of their cycle (day 1 is the first day of menstruation), so it'd be unlikely to get pregnant the day after your period finishes.
