There are really good directions in the package. The dip sticks are fine (and really cheap) and then the more advanced ones are more money. I used the middle of the road ones, which were like 7 days worth for 14 bucks or so.
Basically there will be a chart in there depending on how long your cycle is, which day you should start testing. After a few months, you will learn when you typically ovulate and you can start a few days before that. When you pee on the stick, you'll want the testing line to be as dark or darker than the control. They'
re tricky to read at first but once you get the hang of them it's a snap.
I could never find my cervix-- told the fertility specialist I didn't think I had one. The mucus thing can be useful when you have the other signs to go along with them. Once you do the ovulation tests for a few months, you will most likely TOTALLY know when you are ovulating and will wonder why you didn't realize it before, and how people dont' "just know."
Also,
if you dont get a positive till very late in your cycle or dont' get one at all over a few months , you can start to suspect some problems. Most likely, the opposite will be true and you'll realize you are ovulating and just need to keep at it.
Hope this helps!
