Halloween Costume Ideas for Babies and Toddlers

Halloween Costume Ideas for Babies & ToddlersLooking for a Halloween costume for your tot this year? No need to look at the store -- we have some ideas for you!

For babies and toddlers, it can be difficult finding a costume – it has to fit properly (especially for those who are walking), and not contain any buttons or other small parts that can be easily removed and pose a choking hazard.

In addition, parents must consider the weather when dressing baby or toddler in a costume – the outfit can’t be too thin or too thick for the weather (especially if you will be outdoors); the child must be able to move freely in it, including hands, arms, legs and feet; he or she must be able to breathe normally; and his or her face (including mouth and nose) should not be covered.

Also keep diaper changes or potty breaks in mind when considering a costume – the fewer zippers, snaps and other complications, the better!

Baby Halloween Costume Ideas

Head gear. Instead of dressing baby from head to toe in a costume, think about a headband that can be decorated. Put glitter or silver paint on a headband and attach small styrofoam balls to make the head gear for a Martian costume, or synthetic fruit or flowers for a fruit basket or flower girl costume. Bunny ears can be found quite inexpensively – check the dollar store for these or other embellished, seasonal headbands. A crown, tiara or a hat are also baby friendly and can be decorated as needed with glitter or other embellishments. Don’t forget to paint your little one’s face with non-toxic face paint to complete the look (save the masks for older kids).

Decorated onesies. A white onesie can be decorated and embellished into a number of different costumes: Paint a number on it in a team color for a football jersey; write a cute slogan across the front, such as “Got Milk?” and paint on a zinc oxide milk mustache; or sew on patches or pieces of felt to make a costume, such as butterfly wings on the back or spots on the front to mimic a leopard or a cow. Or decorate a headband with cat or rabbit ears and attach a tail to a onesie. You could even paint and stick Styrofoam balls or green or white balloons to a onesie and make a costume that looks like grapes.

Toddler Halloween Costume Ideas

Sack of groceries. Take a reusable cloth bag or a paper bag and cut holes in the bottom for your child’s legs. Dress your child in the bag, using the handles as shoulder straps to hold it up, then add lightweight grocery items to the top (stuff with an old towel or newspaper first to fill in the bottom of the bag), such as empty egg cartons, empty cereal or cracker boxes, or empty milk jugs.

Dryer lint. Dress your child in a plain white onesie or white or gray sweatpants and sweatshirt, then decorate the outfit with pieces of randomly cut gray felt (be sure to stick felt on well with glue or sew it on so that toddlers can’t pull it off and try to eat it).

Superhero. Your child can be a superhero in a plain onesie or t-shirt and pants and a towel. Simply paint or draw on an “S” to the front of the onesie, then tie a towel around his or her neck for a cape, being careful to not tie too tightly.

Hula dancer. A grass skirt, lei and onesie or pants and a top, and your girl can be a hula dancer – or a Jimmy Buffet fan!

Baby and toddler costumers don’t have to be expensive; with a little creativity you can make an easy and safe costume for your child with materials you may already have on hand. Just be sure to follow safety tips, dress your child appropriately for the weather, and always carry a flashlight if you will be out after dark.
