How to Make A Diaper Cake For your Baby Shower

Alison Wood |11, June 2013

Got an upcoming baby shower you're hosting? Or maybe it's your very own baby shower and you want to add a little bling to the decor. Try a diaper cake!

No, it's not edible diapers or a cake shaped like a gigantic diaper; instead it is a cutesy centerpiece to showcase a few essential gifts for the mommy-to-be. It's full of diapers and accessorized with booties, socks, onesies, rattles and more. You can personalize it to your choosing and even make it fit in with the shower's overall theme.

So let's get started. First of all, you will need the following items and materials:

  • 95-100 diapers (96 is the most popular count for a value pack, so that will work perfectly)
  • 1 Large roll of paper towels or five rolled receiving blankets
  • Rubber bands or string for shaping cake and securing items
  • Ribbon is coordinating colors and designs
  • Accessories for garnish such as baby toys, bairbows, bibs, socks, onesies etc.

Use rolled receiving blankets or one large roll of paper towels as your core to build the cake around. Place the core in the middle of a table. Then, roll up each individual diaper and secure with a ribbon or rubber band. Next, place diapers around the core roll to create a complete circle around the core. Band all these diapers together and cover with a matching ribbon.

This will serve as your bottom tier of the diaper cake. Each tier should have one or two large ribbons wrapping around the banded area to add color, cuteness and cover the eye sore of the rubber band. Repeat the same process to construct two or three additional tiers on top of your bottom tier. You want to make each tier a little smaller than the previous one.

Now, on to the accessorizing! This is the step where you can really add personality to your diaper cake with flowers, toys and blasts of color and fun. There are myriads of nooks and crannies around the diaper cake that are perfect for hiding accessories. However, you want to ensure that each accessory is attached and secured to the cake. You do not want items falling off and getting lost in the shuffle of baby shower festivities.

After you have attached all accessories, look down into the middle of the cake. There is a hole just begging to be decorated to make a perfect cake topper. Try sticking balled up tissue paper as filler and then squish a stuffed animal, additional flower, or another eye-catching accessory on top to add the perfect touch!

Choosing colors and patterns that work well together is a major part of this easy-to-assemble centerpiece. By ensuring the accessories are great gifts as well as matching your color and design scheme, you will be able to create the perfect diaper cake that will be remembered and enjoyed by all the guests! You may even get a few requests for additional diaper cakes. Many consignment shops sell these at a not-so-cheap price, so remember you are saving lots of dough completing this creative task yourself.

Enjoy the celebration of a new little life and enjoy dabbling in the crafty side of womanhood!
