The Royal Baby Arrives!

by Katlyn Joy | July 23, 2013 12:00 AM0 Comments

Congratulations to Prince William and Kate, Duchess of Cambridge, who have given birth to their royal son! The third in line to the throne arrived at 4:24 p.m. local time and weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces. No name has yet been announced, but may be revealed as soon as Tuesday or in the next few days.

The announcement from Kensington Palace first was sent out electronically via the royal twitter feed, and websites, then had the formal announcement on fancy paper on a gilded easel outside the palace gates. The last time the easel was used it was for Prince William's birth, coincidentally.

The Queen was notified first by a call to an encrypted phone and just in time. She is scheduled to take her annual holiday to Balmoral Estate in Scotland beginning Friday.

According to the royal announcement, the royal family, including Prince Philip, Prince Charles the Prince of Wales, his wife Camilla Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and other family members are all "delighted."

Prince Charles stated, "Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone's life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future."

Prince William was present with Kate throughout the birth at a private wing of St. Mary's Hospital. They arrived shortly before 6 a.m. at the hospital. She is expected to remain another night in the hospital. It is the same hospital where Princess Diana gave birth to Prince William and Prince Harry. The baby's birth was vaginal, not by cesarean section and both mother and son are doing well. No one, including the royal couple, knew what gender the baby was until the birth.

The title of the new baby will be officially His Royal Highness Prince ______ of Cambridge. The name is being waited upon by many families who just gave birth to sons so that they may either copy or avoid the royal name.

How long it may take for the name announcement is unknown. For Prince Harry it occurred the day he was born, while it took a week for Prince William's to be announced.

British Prime Minister David Cameron stated, "I'm sure that right across the country and indeed right across the commonwealth, people will be celebrating and wishing the royal couple well. It is an important moment in the life of our nation, but I suppose above all, it's a wonderful moment for a warm and loving couple who got a brand new baby boy."

As part of the royal celebration, a 62-gun salute will happen tomorrow, and waters in the fountains of London will be turned blue. There will be fireworks as well.

The Royal Mint has produced 2,013 silver coins with a shield of the Royal Arms to be given to newborns sharing the royal offspring's birthday. All manner of commemorative items and souvenirs are flooding area shops to be snatched up by those celebrating the new Prince's birth. It's estimated that the royal birth will give a 0 million boost to the economy.

It is just short of 27 months since Prince William and Kate tied the knot at a much anticipated ceremony at Westminster Abbey on April 29, 2011. The baby was reportedly due in mid-July, and may have been about two weeks past due.

President Obama and First Lady Michelle extended their well-wishes through a written statement. "We wish them all the happiness and blessings parenthood brings. The child enters the world at a time of promise and opportunity for our two nations. Given the special relationship between us, the American people are pleased to join with the people of the United Kingdom as they celebrate the birth of the young prince."

On Twitter, the First Lady added the message, "Being a parent is the best job of all."

Twitter reported a height of tweets after the news broke that Kate was in labor, with 25,300 tweets being sent per minute, about the royal birth.

Prince William is taking a two week paternity leave. It is unclear whether the new family will go to Kate's family's estate for a few weeks or elsewhere.
