    closing accounts (and opening them as well btw) does hurt your credit score. But not for a long time.
    Sometimes, closing accounts really is the best thing to do in the long run. And your score only changes by a few points -- so it's not like you're moving entire categories.

    I closed a CC acct and opened a new CC when they were yanking me around too bad (turned out that I got quite a bit of $ from a class action lawsuit with that CC company too
     
    )
    and my credit only went down about 10 points in total. That was several years ago and I've completely recovered from that temporary ding in my credit score.
