When banks turn evil

  • We also have 2 accounts at 2 banks right now, but we're in the process of moving everything over to the one we just opened. Dh has his checks direct deposited, so we still have to get the new account info set up for that before we can completely ditch the one account (with IBC).

    We are leaving them (IBC) for a similar reason regarding overdraft fees. We've noticed several times over the last couple of years that we've gotten hit up for high NSF (non-sufficient funds) fees when we really didn't agree with the bank. Dh is a stickler for keeping good bank records, though like anyone else he is only human and is bound to make a mistake occassionally. However, the constant NSF fees were getting to be a bit old. We spent so much time arguing over fees and getting them reversed. Finally we signed up for online banking and were able to have an up to the minute view of our account (obviously this excludes checks written but not yet cashed). It was at this time that dh started to see what was going on. A lot of the times even though we had money deposited at 12am and a withdrawl hit a short while later, the bank would bump the withdrawl ahead of the deposit so that it showed as hitting before the funds were actually there. This was NOT how the funds were actually being applied however. Dh saw with his own eyes, on more than one occassion, his direct deposit hit and then a withdrawl hit afterwards, but the following day they'd be switched to show the opposite. Of course the bank admits nothing, and actually had the odacity to act like they'd be doing us some huge favor when they'd remove the NSF fee when we'd b!tch about it. (And they wouldn't always remove it either.) So, finally, enough was enough and we started a new account with another bank (Arvest) that has been much better all the way around (friendlier, better hours, excellent customer service, no false NSF fees or otherwise funny business). Each Friday that dh's check is deposited we go and withdrawl the majority out and deposit it in the new account at the other bank. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks (ie pay periods) dh will have everything sorted out at work so that the direct deposits can start going in to our new account and we can kick IBC to the curb for good.

  • Rebekah....if you guys do the onlien banking thing with for the same type of thing happening there. My account is with Arvest and I notice funny things that happen online. The order the checks are processed in....appears to change some times from day to day. So far it has never cost me any money, because we don't normally run that account of money...but it changes enough to make me a little uncomfortable.
